Relaxation Techniques for Migraines and Headaches

It is now widely accepted that both the tension headache and its ugly cousin, the migraine, can be triggered by high levels of stress and tension. In some instances, the best way to relieve symptoms of either one is to practice a few basic relaxation techniques and try some home remedies to remove the stress that is building up in the nerves and muscles of the face, neck and spine. The good news is there are a few good home remedies that are worth trying out.

Essential Oils

Lavender oil is one way to help reduce pain from migraines and headaches naturally while providing a soft and soothing aroma therapy. The oil can be diluted into boiling water to be inhaled slowly, or a few drops can be applied at the temples to reduce discomfort. Peppermint oil is also shown to be effective at altering blood flow to the brain. It can be inhaled to increase blood flow and oxygen. Basil oil is a relaxant that is especially useful for people who tend to have tight muscles in the face, neck and shoulder area which can be causing tension pain.

Massage

Whether done at home or by a professional, massages of the head and face can be especially useful in reducing stress and removing knots in muscles built up over time. A single massage may provide relief for weeks at a time as the muscles return to their normal state and don’t have harmful acids and other toxins built up in them.

Dietary Changes

In many cases, a headache or migraine can be triggered by poor nutrition or as the body reacts to lack of certain nutrients and vitamins. High caffeine and alcohol intake can also have an impact on when and why headaches occur. The best thing to do is to eat a balanced diet and drink plenty of water to keep from getting dehydrated. A doctor can help determine areas where the patient’s diet is suffering and provide useful hints to improve overall health.

Sleep

Not getting enough sleep or sleeping too much can trigger headaches and migraines, in many cases. It is important to set and maintain a regular sleep schedule of going to bed at night and waking at the same times each day and getting eight hours of uninterrupted sleep. If regular sleep interruptions or insomnia are a problem, seeking medical help may be required to ensure that proper night’s rest is attainable.

Exercise

Regular exercise and stretching have known therapeutic properties. As the body releases hormones that get pumped through the system, toxins are flushed out and moods are elevated. Meditation and deep breathing exercises are also a part of this group and can provide huge benefits in terms of relaxation and stress relief.
