CLUSTER HEADACHES RECUR SEVERAL TIMES A DAY
At National Headache Institute, when patients describe their pain as a “cluster” of individual stabbing, knife-like pain, we begin to evaluate whether they are suffering from cluster headaches.
Our team of medical experts, led by Dr. Payman Sadeghi, has significant experience in diagnosing and effectively treating this type of condition.
Cluster headaches are rare, suffered by only 0.5% of the population. They are four times more likely to occur among males than females.
CLUSTER HEADACHE SYMPTOMS
Cluster headaches recur several times in a single day but are shorter in duration than migraines. They generally last 15 to 30 minutes but sometimes can last for hours.
Cluster headaches can strike very suddenly and without warning, even waking sufferers from their sleep. They are cyclical in nature and occur at roughly the same time each year.
CLUSTER HEADACHE PAIN
Cluster headache pain tends to be localized in one part of the head, usually in the orbits and suborbital regions. The pain experienced is generally severe.
It can bring on other symptoms such as lacrimation (excessive shedding of tears), miosis (contraction of the eye pupil), eyelid edema (abnormal fluid accumulation), rhinorrhea (mucous discharge from the nose), ptosis (upper eyelid drooping caused by muscle paralysis), conjunctival injection and nasal congestion.
The patient will tend to be free of pain between recurrences of the cluster headache. In contrast to migraines, cluster headaches mostly affect young males between the ages of 27 and 31.
OXYGEN TREATMENT FOR CLUSTER HEADACHES RELIEF
Up to 70% of cluster headache patients can be treated with pure oxygen treatment. One hundred percent oxygen at a rate of 7 to 10 liters per minute is the standard treatment.
The medications most useful in treating cluster headaches are subcutaneous Sumatriptan, which may be repeated for acute symptoms, and Prednisone, which in large doses will suppress pain during the headache.
