Hemiplegic Headaches

WHAT ARE HEMIPLEGIC HEADACHES?

The term “hemiplegic” means paralysis on one side of the body. When individuals suffer from hemiplegic headaches, they will experience a migraine attack that causes temporary weakness along one side of the body. The arms, legs or face can be affected and it is common to feel pins and needles or total numbness in one or more of these areas.

Vision, speech and concentration problems are also common. All of this can make for a scary and stressful experience for the person involved. These symptoms are especially frightening when experienced for the first time as they are sometimes similar to stroke symptoms.

The good news is that hemiplegic headaches rarely last for longer than 24 hours and the headache can dissipate before the weakness does. All patients are different and may experience a range of varying symptoms.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF HEMIPLEGIC HEADACHES?

Unfortunately, hemiplegic headaches are genetic and have been linked to three particular genes – CACNA1A, ATP1A2 and SCN1A. When these genes become mutated or damaged, they can lead to the breakdown of certain proteins in the body. This protein is essential for clear communication between nerve cells. When this protein is not present, the nerve cells have problems taking up or releasing neurotransmitters – these are the messengers that send messages between cells.

HOW ARE HEMIPLEGIC HEADACHES TREATED?

The treatment of hemiplegic headaches can be a challenge. There are usually more symptoms involved than with a normal migraine or headache. Therefore, treatment needs to be more precise and tailored to the patient.
